Eb
Davis
Eb Davis was born in 1945 in the
delta town of Elaine, Arkansas, and raised in Memphis
Tennessee. In the sixties he moved to New York where he
spent many years performing before moving to Germany, where
he currently resides.
His first exposure to music came through
Gospel Music, as it was the only music that was allowed in
the home. When Eb was six or seven he stumbled on an old
man, Jim Hunt, sitting on his front porch playing acoustic
guitar, and a style of music Eb had never heard before - the
Blues.
When he was about fourteen, Eb left
Arkansas and the 'country-life' behind and moved to Memphis,
a thriving Blues scene. Here he spent his weekends on Beale
Street and went to jam sessions in Handy Park. He saw all
the great bluesmen coming through Memphis at the time, which
included Bobby Bland, BB King, Junior Parker and Albert
King.
After a chance meeting with Eugene
Goldston, owner of the 521 Club in Brooklyn, Eb left Memphis
and went to work in Brooklyn for Eugene. Here he formed "The
Soulgroovers," which became the regular house band at the
club. With the Soulgroovers Eb eventually took to the road,
working with acts including Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett,
Isaac Hayes, Ray Charles and BB King.
After the Soulgroovers broke up, Eb
started singing with The Drifters, who took him to Europe
for the first time. Here he met Wolfgang Ruegner, and was
asked to join his nine-piece "Bayou Blues Band." Eb
accepted, and has been living in Europe ever since, forming
his own band "The Superband," which has been performing in
various configurations for over 25 years. Eb boasts more
than 19 recordings of his own, and numerous other recordings
as a sideman/guest, plus a career of an estimated thousands
of concerts in more than 60 different countries.
Eb Davis was inducted into the Blues
Hall of Fame as an official Blues Ambassador to the state of
Arkansas. In 2008 he was voted Best R&B Singer In Europe
by The Deutsche Rock music Verein.
Quotes
"The man can sing! EB Davis can just as easily tackle
a Roy Brown number as he can a James Brown. He has a
slightly jazz-inflected way of riding the rhythm that brings
to mind the great Bobby Bland." -Norman
Darwen (Blueprint)
"EB Davis harbours plenty of songwriting talent. He
has soul to spare." -Bill
Dahl (Living Blues)
